Sachin Pilgaonkar breezes through the garden of Urdu songs at Gulistan-e-Ghazal

Well-known actor and director Sachin Pilgaonkar was recently in Nagpur for the Dr Vinay Waikar memorial programme organised by Waikar family and Saptak at Kavi Kulguru Kalidas auditorium. The event – Gulistan-e-Ghazal – derived its name from a book of the same name penned by Dr Waikar, who apart from being a respected doctor, was also an author and a passionate poet. The evening was organized to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of Dr Waikar which falls on January 2.

Pilgaonkar, who loves everything Urdu, was present the at the event to speak about the language, grammar and nuances of ghazal and poetry. Holding the conversation with the actor was Dr Waikar’s son Amit. Speaking with Amit, Pilgaonkar spoke about the origins of Urdu, the correct usage of the language and the use of Urdu in Indian cinema. Pilgaonkar not only spoke about the brilliant songs and poems by people like Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kaifi Azmi and Sahir Ludhyanvi, he also recited one his own shayaris.

Complementing the dialogue between Pilgaonkar and Amit Waikar perfectly were city singers Aniruddha and Rasika Joshi, who along with other musicians mesmerized the audience with their renditions of different ghazals.
