In an extremely unfortunate incident, a 21-year-old migrant labourer lost her twins soon after giving birth to them on a Shramik Special train on May 22 afternoon. The woman Gayatri Devi was travelling along with her husband Bhaiya Lal from Vapi in Gujarat to Varanasi.
As per reports, Gayatri was eight-months pregnant during the journey. She had started experiencing labour pains while on-board the train. Fellow women passengers volunteered to help her deliver the babies. She had given birth to twin boys, somewhere after the train crossed Bharwari in Kaushambi district. The train was stopped after the authorities were informed about the birth.
Amodh Singh, Head Constable, RPF, at Sirathu station said: “After we got the news, the train was stopped at Sirathu, where the woman was brought down, along with the twins. She was then sent to Sirathu PHC in an Ambulance. While the twins did not survive, the doctors managed to save the mother, who is currently being treated at isolation ward of the Kaushambi district hospital.”
Dr Deepak Seth, Chief Medical Superintendent of Kaushambi district hospital said that the delivery was premature and the twins were born underweight. One of the babies had died before reaching the hospital and another was alive when he was brought at the hospital. Doctors tried to save the boy by giving him oxygen support but could not save him.
