The desire for owning a smartphone led a 21-year old man to kill an 11-year-old boy at Rampura village in Detroj taluka of Ahmedabad district early last month. Ahmedabad Rural Police arrested the accused Pravin Bajania, a resident of Kaaz village near Rampura on Wednesday.

The incident took place on August 2, when the victim, Punaji Amratji Thakor, was using his smartphone while on his way back home. Desire got the better of the accused Bajania when he saw the boy with the smartphone and decided to snatch it from him.

However, the boy resisted and started screaming when the accused tried to take away his smartphone. Unfortunately, Bajania overpowered the young lad, dragged him into nearby shrubs and slit his throat with a sharp-edged weapon to prevent him from drawing attention with his screaming. The accused then dug a hole, buried the dead boy and fled with his smartphone. He switched off the phone and thus avoided detection for a long time, according to police sources.

However, when the accused switched on the phone on Tuesday and started it, police traced its location and nabbed him from Detroj.
