Versatile actor Ajay Devgn will be playing the role of legendary football coach Syed Abdul Rahim in a sports biopic. The announcement was made by Zee Studios through its Twitter handle. The film will be directed by Amit Sharma, who has directed the 2015 film Tevar and upcoming film Badhaai Ho. The biopic will be produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla and Joy Sengupta. The screenplay of the film will be written by Saiwayn Quadres (Mary Kom and Neerja) and Ritesh Shah (D-Day and Airlift).

Speaking about the project and Devgn playing the central character, producer Boney Kapoor in an interview with the Bombay Times said, “I was amazed that not many are aware of someone as significant as Syed Abdul Rahim. He’s an unsung hero whose achievements must be saluted. It takes someone like Ajay Devgn to play Syed Abdul Rahim.”

Syed Abdul Rahim was the coach and the manager of the Indian Football Team from 1950-1963. Under his leadership, Indian Football Team reached the semi-finals of the Olympic Football Tournament in Melbourne in 1956. Syed also led the Indian team to victory in the Asian Games in 1962.

Biopics seem to be the flavor of the season. While ‘Sanju’ based on Sanjay Dutt’s life is raking moolah at the box office, recently released film ‘Soorma’ based on hockey player Sandeep Singh is getting rave reviews from audience and critics alike. Other sports biopics, which will hit the theatres in future are Akshay Kumar’s Gold and Ranveer Singh’s 83. Devgn, interestingly, will also be seen in another biopic wherein he will be playing the role of Chanakya.
