Self-styled Godman Asaram, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in April 2018 by a Jodhpur Court, has sent a mercy plea to the Governor of Rajasthan Kalyan Singh requesting dilution of his life sentence. Asaram was given the punishment after the court found him guilty of raping a 16-year-old girl living in his ashram in 2013.

Asaram, who’s 77 years old, through the mercy plea, has pleaded for dilution of his life sentence terming the punishment as ‘gruelling’ and has requested to consider his old age. Singh has sent the mercy plea to the Department of Home Affairs seeking a detailed report on the plea.

The department has forwarded the plea to the Jodhpur Central Jail administration, which has sought a report from the district administration and police. Once the jail administration receives the report, it will send it to the Director General (Jail) of Rajasthan.

Earlier in July 2018, the self-styled godman had moved to High Court and challenged the sentence. His petition, however, is yet to be heard.
