At 78, retd. Army doctor gets life term for chopping wife into 300 pieces, stuffing her in tiffins…

In an unbelievable and barbaric act, a 78-year-old retired doctor of the Indian army Somnath Parida, who killed his wife by chopping her into 300 pieces and stuffing those pieces in 22 small tiffins was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court. The incident took place at Odisha’s Bhubaneshwar six years back. Apart from the life term, court also fined Parida with Rs 50, 000.

Somnath Parida, who according to his relatives has temper issues, killed his 61-year-old wife Ushashri Samal using a steel torch in a fit of rage in June 2013. Later, the doctor chopped her body into six-inch pieces using a surgeon’s scalpel, scissor and a kitchen knife and poured phenyl to prevent any foul smell.

The incident came to fore after the couple’s children (one boy and a girl living in US and Dubai respectively) insisted on talking to their mother. Following which, they smelt a rat and contacted their maternal uncle Ranjan Samal to visit the house.

Samal along with some relatives reached the house; Parida didn’t open the door. Consequently, they peeked inside through a window and came across a foul smell emanating from the house. Immediately, they lodged a police complaint. Cops broke open the house at night and recovered the trunk containing body parts of Ushashri along with some incriminating evidences and arrested Parida. As per some reports, the couple had a long history of marital discord post their children shifted abroad.
