India’s second-richest man and chairman of Wipro Ltd Azim Premji raised the philanthropy bar by pledging to donate 7.5 billion dollars (approx. Rs 52,750). Premji gave away 34% of his shares worth Rs 52,750 crore in Wipro Ltd thus making him the most generous donor in the Indian history ever.
As per a press statement by Wipro foundation, “Azim Premji’s philanthropic activities have an overarching vision to contribute to developing a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society in India. To enable this vision, the Azim Premji Foundation works directly in education and supports other not-for-profits working in some specific areas through multi-year financial grants.”
Premji inherited his father’s vegetable oil company and transformed it into a global software powerhouse. Premji, known for his frugal life, still flies economy class, travels in inexpensive cars. So much so that the India’s second richest man takes an auto rickshaw from airport to the Wipro offices! In fact, the billionaire tycoon even used to monitor toilet paper at Wipro offices and would regularly tell people to switch off the lights.
In 2018, India’s richest Mukesh Ambani had topped ‘Hurun Indian Philanthropy List 2018.’ As per a China-based Hurun Research Institute, Ambani donated Rs 437 crores in the year 2018 as a part of Reliance Foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). With a net worth of Rs 3,71,000 crores, Ambani remains the richest Indian for the seventh year in a row.
