With a total of 99/182 seats in Gujarat and 44/68 seats in Himachal Pradesh in the Assembly elections, the BJP is set to form government in both the states. The BJP retained its power in Gujarat for sixth straight term in office and the Gujarat elections proved to be a successful prestige battle for PM Narendra Modi in his home term with more than the required majority seats of 92.

After the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections, the BJP now blooms in 14 states in India

The newly appointed Congress President Rahul Gandhi failed the litmus test as Congress grabbed 80 seats in Gujarat and 21 in Himachal Pradesh. The Congress couldn’t capitalise on topics like Patel aandolan, trader’s anger and farmers’ issues. However, political analysts are of the view that Rahul Gandhi, despite failing to make government in any of the states (Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh), did put an impressive fight with a nail-biting finish against the BJP. During the 2014 Lok Sabha election campaign, Narendra Modi had chanted slogans of ‘Congress-free India’ but after Congress’ performance in Gujarat, it seems writing-off Congress from the electoral map to be difficult.
