Congress leader Shashi Tharoor made a controversial statement on Tuesday when he said that if the BJP wins 2019 polls, India will turn into ‘Hindu Pakistan.’ Tharoor was speaking at an event in Thiruvananthapuram. The Congress leader also said that BJP after winning the polls will write a new constitution, which will pave way for a country like Pakistan where rights of the minorities won’t be respected.
News Agency ANI quoted Tharoor as saying, “If they win a repeat in the Lok Sabha, our democratic constitution as we understand, it will not survive as they will have all the elements they need to tear apart the constitution of India and write a new one.” The politician added, “That new one will be the one which will enshrine principles of Hindu Rashtra, that will remove equality for minorities, that’ll create a Hindu Pakistan and that isn’t what Mahatama Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad and great heroes of freedom struggle fought for.”
Tharoor’s comments obviously didn’t go down well with BJP, which demanded an apology from Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Speaking to ANI, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi must apologise for what Shashi Tharoor said. Congress was responsible for creation of Pakistan because of its ambitions. Yet again it has gone ahead to demean India and defame Hindus of India.”
Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor said that his comments have been misconstrued. He clarified his comment in a Facebook post on Thursday.
