The CBI special court on Thursday sent former union minister P Chidambaram to judicial custody at Tihar Jail till September 19 in the money laundering and corruption case related to INX Media scam. Earlier in the day, the court also rejected P Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail. The decision to send P Chidambaram to judicial custody comes after CBI moved an application in the court demanding the same.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal opposed CBI’s demand for judicial custody saying that there was scope of tampering the evidence related to the case. Sibal also said that P Chidambaram was willing to surrender and stay in ED custody.
The apex court bench, headed by R Banumathi and comprising justice AS Bopanna, also upheld that the case diary of the CBI and ED should be perused by the court. This was allowed since the INX Media scam case is related to economic offences and the gravity of the offence pushed the court to approach the case differently.
