On the occasion of former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi’s 75th birth anniversary actor turned politician Congress leader Urmila Matondkar arrived in Nagpur to be a part of the event Azadi se Azadi ki or (आज़ादी से आज़ादी की ओर) as the chief guest. The event, which included numerous dramas and musical performances, depicted the golden pages of Indian history and the contribution of Congress party towards nation building.

Speaking about the event, Urmila in an exclusive interview with Nation Next said, When Narendraji (Jichkar) briefed me about the concept of the event, I was thrilled because I thought it was unique and interesting. More so, it was depicted so beautifully.”

Speaking further, Urmila told Nation Next, “People ask quite a daring question that what has Congress done in the past 70 years? Post independence our country didn’t even manufacture a needle. Today, things have changed and its because Congress developed our nation.”

Speaking further with us, Urmila censured the recent arrest of former home and finance minister of India P Chidambaram by the CBI and the grilling of MNS leader Raj Thackeray by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), she said, “Chidambaram’s arrest puts a question mark on India’s democracy.”

The motto of the play was to convey the message that not everything that’s on social media can be trusted. It can be misleading. Popular slogans like ‘Jai jawan jai kisan’ were also raised during the play.

The event was conceptualised, convened and spearheaded by Bahujan Vichar Manch leader Narendra Jichkar. Jichkar told Nation Next, “The event was organised so that people at large realise the struggle and efforts put in by all prime ministers of the Congress right from Jawaharlal Nehru to Manmohan Singh. India wasn’t built in a day; it was developed brick by brick by the Congress.”

He added, “For all the people, especially the BJP, who say that the Congress didn’t do anything for the country since independence, need to witness the event. The Congress party built the nation post independence.”

The event was held at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall in the presence of prominent Congress leaders including Muzaffar Hussain, Sunil Kedar, Anees Ahmed, Kundatai Vijaykar, Praful Gaudadhe Patil to name a few. The play was written and directed by Salim Sheikh.
