After earning accolades from Gujarati audiences, Marathi adaptation of the play Code Mantra was staged at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall recently. The play directed by Rajesh Joshi had Marathi theatre and film actors Mukta Barve, Ajay Purkar, Umesh Jagtap, Vikram Gaikwad, Milind Adhikari, Kaustubh Diwan among other actors.
The play revolves around a court martial of a young army officer, Vikram Shelar who is charged with the murder of his younger brother Ravi Shelar. Ravi is a commando of the Maratha regiment who’s murdered in his barracks after he writes a letter seeking transfer as he’s unable to cope up with the challenging commando training programme. The letter finds its way to Ravi’s seniors who decide to ‘teach him’ the army protocol.
The play consisted of attractive sets and beautiful light settings. Code Mantra keeps the audience gripped throughout and the brilliant performances by the actors make it a delightful watch. When Nation Next caught up with Marathi actress, Mukta Barve, after the play, she said, “Code Mantra is a kind of a play which does not need any publicity as its really unique and is based on a very interesting topic. We have got a good response today and we are planning for more shows for Nagpur. This city’s audience loves and enjoys good plays and that makes me want to perform in Nagpur again and again.”
Takeaway: The plot of the play reminds you of the story of the 1992 Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise starrer Hollywood movie, A few good men.
