In a World Health Organization (WHO) online media briefing held recently, Dr Michael Ryan, Executive director of WHO Health Emergencies Programme, said that Coronavirus may never go away. Ryan made the statement while warning against any attempt to predict as to for how long the virus would keep circulating.

Dr Ryan added that even if the vaccine is found, controlling the virus will require a massive effort. “It is important to put this on the table: This virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities and may never go away. HIV has not gone away but we have come to terms with it,” he said.

“I do not believe that anyone can predict when this disease will disappear. There are currently more than 100 potential vaccines in development. There are other illnesses such as measles that still haven’t been eliminated despite vaccines being available for them,” Dr Ryan added.
