A pregnant woman, who tested positive for COVID-19 on April 2, gave birth to a healthy baby at AIIMS in Delhi on Friday. According to the doctors, this might be the first case in India wherein a coronavirus positive patient delivered a baby.
The woman contracted the virus after her husband, a senior resident doctor working in the department of physiology at AIIMS, was found to be infected with coronavirus. Along with the couple, the doctor’s brother has also tested positive.
Dr Neerja Bhatia, Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who led the team, which carried out the delivery, said that the baby boy was born on Friday evening through C-section and is healthy so far. The baby, according to the medical officials, is with his mother since he will require breastfeeding.
Another doctor informed a leading news portal, “So far, there is no proof that suggests that the virus can be transmitted through breastfeeding. Though the mother has tested positive for coronavirus, she hasn’t shown any visible symptoms of the virus yet. The AIIMS has already prepared a protocol dedicated to the care of COVID-19 infected pregnant woman patients.”
