81 inmates tested positive for Coronavirus at Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail on May 10 taking the total number of cases in the jail to 184. Out of 184, while 158 cases are that of jail inmates, 26 are of jail officials. Prison authorities have now developed a temporary quarantine facility inside the jail.
A senior jail officer said, “Due to law and order issues, and other civic, medical, logistical issues, which may arise if we think of shifting the inmates to the quarantine facility in Mahul, we have set up a COVID-19 quarantine ward at circle no. 3 and circle no. 10 at Arthur Road Jail.” He added that a medical team of seven doctors will visit the quarantine ward everyday to check on the infected cases.
Previously, a 54-year-old female inmate of Byculla women’s jail had also tested positive for coronavirus in the city. She was admitted to JJ Hospital a few days ago after her oxygen saturation level had fallen below 90%. During the treatment, her first test for coronavirus came out negative. However, her second test conducted on May 10 came out positive. She’s currently undergoing treatment at St George Hospital.
