COVID-19 lockdown: Thanks to the reruns of epic serials like Ramayan and Mahabharat, Doordarshan became the highest watched channel in the country for the week ending on April 3. Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) said, “Getting back classic programmes like Ramayan to keep locked down people entertained has catapulted Doordarshan (DD) to be the highest watched channel in India for the week ended April 3.”

“The national broadcaster could achieve the feat, which involves a nearly 40,000% jump in viewership in the evening and morning bands, despite a surge reported by the private broadcasters who are also experiencing higher viewership,” said BARC.

Prasar Bharati on its official twitter handle wrote, “Viewership of re-telecast of Ramayan and Mahabharat on Doordarshan reaches Hundreds of Millions.” While Ramayan got over 556 million (55 crore, 60 lakhs), Mahabharat fetched over 150 million views (over 15 crore) in just one week.

The rerun of Ramayan started from March 28 on DD National and Mahabharat re-telecast started from March 28 on DD Bharati. Other classics like Byomkesh Bakshi, Shaktimaan, Buniyaad, Dekh Bhai Dekh, Alif Laila, etc., are also being rerun.
