Dussehra or Vijayadashmi marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura; it also marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. While the celebrations of this victory, Ravana Dahan (putting the Ravana statue on fire) takes place at many places in Nagpur, but the Dussehra celebrations at Kasturchand Park ground are the biggest. Nation Next gives you a low down on the 65th Vijayadashmi or Dussehra celebrations which are going to take place at KP ground tomorrow.

During the partition in 1947, a lot of people from Pakistan migrated to different places in India. Some of them who settled in Nagpur later started the organisation called the ‘Sanatan Dharam Yuvak Sabha.’ This organization apart from being actively involved in a lot of social work has been organising the Dussehra celebrations at Kasturchand Park ground for the last 65 years!

The theme for the Dussehra celebrations is different every year and revolves around current affairs in India. While speaking about this year’s theme,  the junior vice president of Sanatan Dharam Yuvak Sabha, Milan Sahni told Nation Next: “Keeping in mind the unrest in India because of the Uri attacks, we have kept the theme of this year’s celebrations as ‘Surgical Strike’. We have painted the faces of the chief of the terrorist organization ‘Jamaat-ud-dawa’, Hafiz Saeed and other terrorists over Ravana’s body. We intend to burn terrorism to ashes this year!”

More than a lakh Nagpurians visit KP ground every year to witness these celebrations. Obviously, the arrangement and security measures are given a lot of importance. Prashant Sahni, the joint secretary of the organisation told Nation Next: “We are expecting a turnout of 1,25,000 people tomorrow and we have made arrangements for 18,000 people to sit. To make sure nothing goes wrong, we have appointed more than 50 security guards for tomorrow’s function. Around 400-450 Nagpur police personnel will also be on guard. We would like to thank Nagpur Police for being so supportive.”

Like every year three statues have been prepared which will be put on fire. These statues include a 71-feet statue of Ravana, a 55-feet statue of his brother Kumbhakarna and a 60-feet statue of his son Meghanada. Interestingly, the statues at KP ground Dussehra celebrations are made by a certain Binwar family which has been making these statues for more than 40 years now! Before the Ravana Dahan, a special firework show has been kept for the spectators which will start at 5:00 pm. Thereafter, a small Ramleela programme will be also be staged which has been produced by Vijay Kher, the chairman of the Dussehra committee. The Ravana Dahan will take place at 7:00 pm.

Prominent personalities are expected to be present for the Ravana Dahan at KP ground. These personalities include Ministry of Energy, New and Renewable Energy Maharashtra – Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Nagpur city Mayor – Pravin Datke, Nagpur MLAs – Sudhakar Deshmukh, Dr Milind Mane and Krishna Khopde,  congress politicians Vilas Muttemwar and Dr Nitin Raut and Nagpur Mahanagar RSS Sanghachalak – Rajesh Loya.
