Ex municipal councillor of Yavatmal, Pravin Diwate, who was also the main accused in the Prashant Dubey murder case, was shot dead early morning today in his office in Bangar Nagar, Yavatmal.

According to our sources in Yavatmal, the murderers first threw chilli powder in Pravin’s eyes, after which they shot six bullets at him and slit his throat with a knife.

This gruesome murder was reportedly planned to avenge the murder of Prashant alias Gattya Dubey, the then chairman of the planning committee of the Yavatmal Municipal Corporation, who was allegedly murdered by Pravin on June 3, 2007. Our sources in Yavatmal informed us that after Prashant’s murder, Pravin had been attacked multiple times. “Pravin was attacked last year, wherein two bullets were shot at him. However, he was rushed to the hospital immediately, and he survived. He was also attacked before, in September 2013. People in Yavatmal are speculating that while Pravin has been murdered to avenge the death of Prashant Dubey,  there was a political backing to the murderers.” said a source.

When Nation Next spoke to Yavatmal’s Superintendent of Police, Akhilesh Singh, he informed us that the incident took place at around 7:50 in the morning. “The detailed reports are yet to come and the search for the culprits is on,” he said.

Yavatmal police in October 2014 had also invoked the Maharashtra Control Of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against Pravin Diwate, and his 13 aides in murder case of Gaurav Shankar Raut.
Pravin Diwate is survived by his wife Usha Diwate, who is the President of Yavatmal’s Women’s Congress and the sitting municipal councillor in Yavatmal.
