It’s being said by many health and industry experts that the world post COVID-19 outbreak is going to be totally different and the outbreak is going to change the way the world operates. An example of this is the recent decision taken by India’s largest IT firm TCS (Tata Consultancy Services), which plans to engage over 75% of its workforce to ‘Work from Home’ permanently by 2025. Currently, due to the lockdown, almost 90% of TCS employees are working from home.
TCS, as per its 25/25 model, plans to engage 75% of its 4.48 lakh global workforce to work from home by 2025. NG Subramaniam, Chief Operating Officer, TCS, said, “We don’t believe that we need more than 25% of our workforce at our facilities in order to be 100% productive.”
Implementation of the 25/25 model will mean that the company will require less office space than what it occupies today. Subramanian said that under the model, each employee would spend only 25% working time in office meaning, of all the team members, only 75% of a project team would have to be in a single location. TCS plans to put the 25/25 model to work (and put the required processes and systems in place) over the next two years.
As per experts, if TCS achieves what it plans to do, it will certainly be an example of a new norm across the IT and related industries. It will attract better talent (especially women who were not able to work because of bringing up children) and people may even settle for lower salaries. Employees will spend less to no time in travelling and will move out from cities to smaller towns with lesser rents. Also, the model can turn out to be game changer and have a great impact on sectors like real estate, transport, service industry, etc.,
