The post graduate department of Fashion and Design of LAD College and Smt RP College, Seminary Hills, Nagpur, recently organised a three-day Gond painting workshop for its students and staff. The workshop was organised to promote the tribal art of Gond paintings from Madhya Pradesh, which are often done by the underprivileged artists residing in the interiors of the state.

The workshop was conducted by Sunil Shyam Moti, an artisan from Dindori district, Madhya Pradesh, and belonging to a family of Gond painting artists. Bhayuji, a member of the family, was awarded with Padma Shri by the Government of India for his skills in the art on March 20, 2018.

Moti, during the workshop, demonstrated all the techniques and designs related to Gond paintings with minor details and the intricacies of the art on paper, canvas and fabric in a very systematic manner. The workshop was helpful for the students of the department involved in research projects relating to fabric and garment ornamentation.

The workshop was managed by coordinator Dr Harsha Jharia (HOD), Dr Varsha Mankar, Vibhavari Gotmare and Rakshata Potdukhe. Dr Panna Akhani (Director, Women’s Education Society) and Dr Deepali Kotwal (Principal, LAD College) appreciated the efforts taken by the department.
