Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched an attack on the centre on Tuesday as he said that the central government is making sanistisers for the rich from poor people’s share of rice.

Citing a news article about government’s decision to use surplus rice in making sanitisers, Rahul Gandhi wrote on Twitter, “When will India’s poor wake up? You are dying due to starvation and they are engaged in disinfecting the hands of the rich by making a sanitiser from your share of rice.”

Rahul’s statement comes a day after central government decided to convert surplus rice to ethanol for making sanitisers. The decision taken during a National Biofuel Coordination Committee (NBCC) meeting, chaired by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Dharmendra Pradhan.

The government said in a press release that, the surplus rice available with Food Corporation of India (FCI) may be converted into ethanol for utilization in making alcohol-based hand-sanitizers and in blending for Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP).

Several opposition leaders have shown their disagreement to this decision. Indian Nation Congress also tweeted “On one hand, poor people are worried due to starvation in the country, and on the other hand, the BJP government is going to use rice to make sanitizer. This move of BJP government, which failed to provide ration to poor families, does not support poor people of the country.”
