Harish Salve, who’s one of the highest paid lawyers of the country, has charged rupee 1 for representing India at the International Court of Justice. He’s against the death penalty that is awarded to alleged Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav by Pakistan.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj came to Salve’s rescue when a Twitter user Sanjeev Goyal wrote to filmmaker Ashoke Pandit that India could have got any good lawyer with much less fee.
When Nation Next spoke to Harish Salve’s sister Aruna Upadhyaya, who was in London, she said, “The entire country should be proud of him because today he’s the best lawyer to have represented India. Nobody could have done a better job than him. He’s a master in his game.” An elated Aruna further said, “He knows better than anybody else that what has to be done. Moreover, he comes from a family, which is proud to be an Indian. I’m extremely proud of him!”
Speaking about Sushma Swaraj’s tweet, Aruna, said, “He’s fought the case for free! He was true to his father’s (NKP Salve) tradition of serving our country no matter what. We are the fifth generation of our family, who’s fighting for our country. So, nationalism and patriotism comes to us naturally. He’s not money minded. The fact that he’s an extremely expensive lawyer makes us even more proud that he didn’t charge anything. ”
While Pakistan has accused Jadhav of being India’s external intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India, in its appeal to the ICJ has alleged that Jadhav was kidnapped from Iran, where he was involved in business activities (after retiring from Indian Navy).
