More than 100 disgruntled workers employed at the Statue of Unity depicting Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat went on a strike over non-payment of dues for the last three months. The workers and employees, who work for a company named Updater Services Ltd (UDS), accused the Modi led government for exploiting them.

Reportedly, the workers and employees also formed a human chain outside the statue as a sign of protest. The workers including security guards, gardeners, sweepers, liftmen, ticket checkers etc said that the non-payment of their salaries have made their lives miserable. Recently, farmers in the drought-hit Kutch had also protested over diversion of water to the statue’s boating area. Local tribal groups had also claimed that the statue has badly affected their livelihoods.

However, this isn’t the first time the statue has come under scanner. Earlier as well, the statue made headlines due to various infrastructure problems as well as the exorbitant cost it incurred.
