For the first time ever, Maharashtra Election Commission appointed transgender activist Gauri Sawant as its goodwill ambassador. After the transgenders were enrolled as voters for the first time in 2014, their numbers in 2019 went up to 2086 from a mere 918 in 2014.

As a goodwill ambassador, Sawant would visit the houses of transgenders to appeal to them to enrol themselves as voters. Apart from this, Sawant would also explain them the need to exercise their rights.
