Inspired by ‘Kabir Singh,’ Delhi man poses as surgeon to dupe women through dating sites

Delhi Police on Friday arrested a 31-year-old man called Anand Kumar from Lajpat Nagar for allegedly posing as an orthopaedic surgeon on various dating and matrimony websites to extort money from women. Kumar, during the interrogation, revealed that he got the idea of posing as an orthopaedic surgeon from Shahid Kumar’s movie ‘Kabir Singh.’

Kumar, along with his accomplice Priyam Yadav, were arrested by Delhi police after the police received a complaint from a doctor who was duped by the accused. Kumar, created a fake profile on Tinder, posed as ‘Dr Rohit Gujral’ and connected with the doctor (victim). Kumar promised her that he would marry her and made her transfer Rs 30,000 into his bank account. He later blackmailed her by threatening to expose her private pictures and videos.

Anyesh Roy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber Cell), said that Kumars used to run an event management firm and had contacts of a lot of people who aspired to become models and actors. Kumar used the pictures of one of these men to create various fake profiles on dating and matrimonial apps like Bumble, Tinder and Jeevan Saathi with the name of ‘Dr  Rohit Gujral’ and claiming to be an orthopaedic surgeon.

According to reports, Kumar had been involved in the online scam since four months and had conned many women. He would get in touch with the women and start dating them. Then using the excuse of his mother’s treatment, he would start avoiding video calls. Then, within few days he would convince women about his seriousness to marry them. He would then ask these women to send their private pictures and videos. One woman even applied for a loan of Rs 5 lakhs for the accused.
