Filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi, who directed critically acclaimed movies like Rudaali, Chingaari, Ek Pal and Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence, etc., passed away today (Sunday morning) at 4:30 am. Lajmi, who was 61 was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year.
She was undergoing treatment at Kokilaben Hospital from last November. Bollywood celebrities including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Soni Razdan, Rohit Shetty, the Film and Television Director’s Association, Shyam Benegal, had given her financial aid after she was diagnosed with cancer.
Kalpana made her comeback in cinema in the year 1993 with the critically acclaimed Rudaali starring Dimple Kapadia. The film won her a National Film Award for Best Actress. Lajmi, who was longtime manager of late Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika, was also his partner for 39 years till he died in 2011. Daughter of painter Lalita Lajmi and niece of late filmmaker Guru Dutt, Kalpana was considered to be director who made realistic movies.
