Kolkata Police, on Thursday, arrested a 45-year-old man called Subhabrata Majumdar, after he was discovered to be living with his mother’s body, which he had preserved in a refrigerator at his house for the last three years. The police acted on a tip-off and arrested the man from his house in South Kolkata. Bina’s husband Gopal Majumdar, who also lived in the house with the son, is also being questioned.

As per the police, Subhabrata’s mother, Bina Majumdar’ died in 2015 but her son preserved her body to keep withdrawing her pension. Subhabrata applied mummification techniques on his mother’s body to preserve it in a commercial freezer used to store frozen food items and ice-cream.

News18 quoted a senior Kolkata police officer saying, “This is a heinous crime. Initially, her son told us that he loved his mother so much that he didn’t want to part with her. Later, he changed his statement and said that he did this to get her pension as he was unemployed. There are many contradictions in this matter. We are looking at why he kept her body for nearly three years”.
