Man rapes fiancée, demands Rs 5 lakh dowry before marriage

Nagpur’s Jaripatka Police, on Wednesday, booked a man for raping his fiancée for almost a year and demanding Rs five lakh in dowry from her family. Along with the man, his mother has also been booked by the police.

The man, Ashish Haribhau Meshram (26), got engaged the 25-year-old complainant – both residents of Jaripatka – in April 2017. The girl’s family during the engagement had also given a gold ring to Ashish, who is an Indian Railways employee. As per the complaint, Ashish, would visit the girl’s house whenever he was on office leave and would exploit her. On December 25, 2017, a date for the couple’s marriage was fixed and the girl’s family started preparing for the same. However, on May 5, 2018, Ashish called the victim and told her that he cannot marry her unless he is given Rs five lakh to cover all the expenses of the marriage.

Jaripatka police, on the girls complaint, have booked Ashish and his mother – Ratnamala Haribhau Meshram (55) – and have registered a case against the two under sections 376 (1), 420, 417 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
