A 24-year-old man, who started a 1000 kms journey on bicycle along with three of his friends to reach his home for getting married, ended up in a quarantine centre in Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh after covering 850 kms. The man, Sonu Kumar Chauhan, had set out on a journey from Ludhiana in Punjab to Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh, where he was supposed to get married on April 15.
Cycling day and night for almost a week, Sonu and his friends had covered a distance of about 850 kms, when they were stopped by authorities, and put directly into quarantine centre on April 19. Chauhan, who works in a tile factory in Ludhiana district, had set out on bicycle along with his friends, since all means of transportation were shut due to the lockdown.
Chauhan told PTI: “Had I reached home, about 150 km from here, there were chances that the wedding would have taken place without any obstructions but the authorities denied my request to go home.” Chauhan, however, added later that his health is more important than the wedding, which can take place later.
Devranjan Verma, SP of Balrampur, said that Chauhan and his friends were stopped by the authorities while entering into the district, and all of them were directly sent to quarantine centre. If their reports come out negative within the span of 14 days, they’ll be permitted to leave.
