Air Force Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet that went missing on Tuesday with two pilots on board has been traced in the forests near China border. However, there couldn’t be any contact with the pilots.

The missing aircraft was discovered in a dense forest, which is about 60 kms from Tezpur in Assam. “As of now, weather is bad and the place has dense foliage and members of the search operation are yet to reach the spot,” Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sombit Ghosh told the Press Trust of India.

The last contact with the pilots was at around 11:30 am, when the aircraft was nearly 60 km north of Tezpur. The wreckage has been discovered in the same area. The Tezpur Air Force station is 172 km from the China border.

The Russia-made fighter jet, with two pilots on board, took off from Salonibari in Assam at 10.30am on Tuesday.

The missing fighter aircraft, which is the mainstay, is the most modern fighter aircraft in the IAF stock. India, in a contract with Russia, inducted 240 aircrafts out of 272 so far. Since their induction in 1997, seven aircrafts have crashed.
