In an extreme case of negligence, the ashes of an 82-year-old elderly woman named Godavari Nathwani went missing from Gangabai Ghat in Nagpur. The shocking incident came to light after members of Nathwani family, resident of Friends Colony, reached the ghat and asked for the deceased’s ashes.
When Nation Next spoke to a close aid of the family Naresh Jumani, he said, “The crematorium workers at the ghat dodged all questions when asked about the ashes. The family even spoke to police officials about the same. We later learnt that the workers, without even checking the identities and details mentioned in the death certificate of the deceased, handed over the ashes of number 16 instead of number 17 to a Jain family.”
Fakirchand Meshram, who works at the crematorium, told us, “We’re never responsible for such acts. It’s not our duty to hand over the ashes to the family members. Families come and pick up their respective ashes.”
He further said, “In this case, a Jain family, who’s relative’s body was kept in shed number 17 mistakenly picked up shed number 16’s ashes and immersed them on Friday evening. Members of the Nathwani family on Saturday morning asked us about their relative’s ashes. That’s when the confusion that it was the mistake of Jain family got cleared. The family then finally immersed the ashes of their relative.”
