RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat today at an event organised in New Delhi, to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, demanded for a national ban on cow slaughter. However, Bhagwat said that the cows should be protected within the limits of the law and violence in the name of cow slaughter defames the cause.

Bhagwat’s comment comes at a time, when the issue of cow slaughter is already making news on the national front. While after taking charge as the CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath came down heavily on illegal cow slaughter trade, a week back some of the gau rakshaks allegedly chased and killed a 55-year-old dairy farmer Pehlu Khan in Alwar, Rajasthan. The farmer apparently was returning to Haryana with other farmers after buying cows for milking from a Jaipur fair.
