In a major breakthrough, Mumbai Police arrested fugitive gangster and once a top aide of most wanted underworld don Dawood Ibrahim Ejaz Lakdawala from Patna. Ejaz who was arrested on Wednesday night was wanted in connection with multiple cases related to extortion, attempt to murder and rioting.
Mumbai Crime Branch’s anti-extortion cell team at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Mumbai apprehended Lakdawala on Wednesday. Ejaz would be kept in police remand till January 21. Before Ejaz formed his own gang, he had once worked for Ibrahim. In May 2004, the Canadian Police in Ottawa had also arrested him, from where he managed to escape.
Ejaz, against whom the Interpol had issued a Red Corner notice, a few years back was believed to be somewhere in North America as well as in South East Asia.
As per reports, Lakdawala’s daughter Soniya Lakdawala was also involved in threatening and extortion cases. Recently, she was also accused of demanding extortion from a realtor in Bandra (in Mumbai) by threatening him. Last month in December, Soniya was held at Mumbai’s international airport for allegedly trying to fly out with her daughter using a fake passport.
Joint CP Crime, Santosh Rastogi on arrest of the gangster said, “His daughter was in our custody. She gave a lot of information to us. Our sources also told us about his arrival in Patna. He was arrested in Jattanpur police station limits.”
