Nagpur: 20-year-old woman kills herself; husband, three others booked by police for abetting suicide

Nagpur’s Gittikhadan Police have booked a man and three more persons after the man’s 20-year-old wife committed suicide on May 21. The victim, Priyanka Saurabh Patel, a resident of Surendragarh, Gupta Chowk, Nagpur, killed herself by hanging herself on a ceiling fan with the help of a saree.

Upon Priaynka’s suicide, Gittikhadan Polcie had registered a case of accidental death on May 21. However, after further investigations, it came to light that Priyanka’s husband – Saurabh Ramkailas Patel and his three others – Gita Ramkailas Patel, Priyanka Shivujan Kothare and Ramkailas Teja Patel were harassing Priyanka. The victim was told to bring Rs 50,000 as dowry and was also mentally tortured, which made her take the drastic step. Priyanka had gotten married to Saurabh on February 26, 2020.

On the basis of a complaint by Niraj Jagdish Patel (22), resident of Pandharabodi, Gittikkhadan Police have booked Saurabh and three others under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide), 498 (A) (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 34 (criminal acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
