Nagpur man sentenced to 10 years in jail for raping niece

A 26-year-old man, Guruprasad Bhalavi, a resident of Sawandini village in Ramtek Taluka of Nagpur district, who raped his minor niece multiple times during 2015-16, was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by Additional Sessions Judge VM Vaidya on Tuesday.

Bhalavi, from June 2015 to March 2016, exploited his niece by initiating a physical relationship with her. When the minor girl got pregnant, Bhalavi threatened to kill her in case she reveals about their relationship to anyone.

The girl had then lodged a complaint against the accused at Deolapar Police Station, which led the cops to book Bhalavi under sections 323, 344, 354 (a), 376 and 506 of the IPC and sections 4 and 5(j) (2) (1) (n) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A chargesheet was filed against Bhalavi after the investigation.

Bhalavi’s crime was proved in the court, after which he was sentenced to 10 years rigourous imprisonment and was imposed upon with a fine of Rs 5000 for the offense under section 376 (2) (f) (n) of the IPC and sections 4 and 5 (j) (2) (1) (n) of the POCSO Act. Bhalavi was additionally found guilty on charges under sections 344, 354 (a), 323 and 506 and was sentenced to one year of rigourous imprisonment, two years of rigourous imprisonment, six months of rigourous imprisonment and one year of rigourous imprisonment respectively for the offences.
