Nagpur doctors Dr Rahul Saxena and Dr Anand Sancheti from New Era Hospital (Wardhaman Nagar), on Wednesday, against all odds were able to save the life of a 58-year-old man with a timely liver transplant process.
The doctors, who travelled by road all the way in green corridor from Aurangabad to Nagpur (600 kms) to bring the liver of a brain-dead young woman, braved the rough weather and the long distance to bring the liver to Nagpur in 7.5 hours. As a patient needing liver transplant was in the waiting list at the hospital for the last three months, the doctors decided to go themselves to bring the organ.
Speaking to Nation Next, Dr Saxena, who’s a liver surgeon, said, “We were able to bring the organ from Aurangabad in 7.5 hours despite bad weather. Normally, the organ should be transplanted within six hours of retrieval from the donor. But as the donor was a 25-year-old lady, the organ was in a very good condition, which increased its durability. We started the liver transplant operation at 9:30 pm and the operation lasted six hours.” The donor was declared brain dead in Aurangabad after she suffered from post partum venus hemorrhage.
The liver transplant of the 58-year-old man was the ninth liver transplant at New Era hospital. In May 2018, three liver transplants were carried out at the hospital in just five days.
