Minister for Energy, New and Renewable Energy and Guardian Minister for Nagpur Chandrashekhar Bawankule declared that the city would henceforth receive electricity from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) due to Spanco Nagpur Discom Limited’s (SNDL) incompetence to handle the distribution of electricity. The charge to MSEDCL was handed over from Sunday (September 8, 2019) midnight. The energy minister announced the same during a press conference in Nagpur on Sunday.

SNDL in its letter dated August 12, 2019 mentioned that the company was incapable of maintaining distribution system due to its weak financial condition. Hence it requested MSEDCL to take over.

On Sunday, over 1700 power-related complaints were left unanswered due to lack of coordination between MSEDCL and SNDL. A lot of chaos and confusion prevailed after MSEDCL sent SMSes to SNDL consumers requesting them to contact the former’s customer care for assistance in case of power failure. After MSEDCL got flooded with hundreds of complaints, it again sent SMSes to its consumers asking them to ignore the previous messages sent to them.
