Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) released a list of its 77 candidates who would be contesting the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly Elections slated on October 21 this year. Senior NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh from Nagpur would be contesting elections from his domain Katol. Earlier, in 2014, his nephew and then BJP leader Ashish Deshmukh (now in Congress) had defeated the four-time winner from Katol.
However, speculations are rife that Maharashtra minister and BJP MLA from Kamptee Chandrashekhar Bawankule might be fielded against Anil Deshmukh from Katol against the former’s wishes. Stories of the BJP fielding Bawankule against Deshmukh started doing rounds in political circles after the senior leader’s name was missing from the 125 names in the list that the BJP had released.
NCP heavy-weight Ajit Pawar, who recently resigned from the post of MLA, has been allotted his previous constituency Baramati.
