During the ongoing winter session of the State Legislature at Vidhan Bhavan, Nagpur, NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad today slammed the Modi Government for importing sugar from Pakistan even as sugarcane farmers in India are facing troubles. Before his address to the media persons, in a rather dramatic move, Awhad was seen distributing sugar to people around while saying, ‘Pakistan chi sakhar kon ghenar?’ (Who will take this sugar imported from Pakistan?).

Awhad later said, “Central Government has imported 15 lakh metric tonnes of sugar from Pakistan even as sugarcane farmers in India are dying. Farmers are committing suicides, sugar industries are fighting for their existence, meetings are being held with respect to sugarcane FRP (fair and remunerative price) and amidst all this, we are being told by the central government that we should eat sugar from Pakistan.” Referring to PM Modi’s remark of some Congressmen having a meeting with Pakistan High Officials and BJP’s win in the recently concluded Gujarat Polls, Awhad said, “On one hand, the government uses Pakistan’s name to win elections and on the other hand imports onion and sugar from Pakistan, while farmers in our country are dying. It is really sad.”

Making an appeal to citizens, Awhad added, “When I was trying to distribute sugar today saying it is from Pakistan, nobody took it! In the future, all of you will have Pakistan’s sugar in your household. Now, whether you find it sweet or bitter, it’s up to you? I may not even eat sugar from now onwards!”
