Delhi Court issued fresh death warrants for all the four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case – Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Akshay Thakur – and set a new date – March 3 at 6 am – for their hanging in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. This is the third time when the court has announced a death sentence for the four convicts in the case. Previously, a stay was imposed on the death penalty, as the court disposed off all the legal remedies offered by the convicts.
However, unlike other convicts in the case, Gupta, who also has the option of filing a mercy plea, is the only one who so far hasn’t filed a curative petition.
On December 16, 2012, six people including four of the above convicts gang raped and murdered a 23-year-old medical student Nirbhaya (name changed) in a moving bus in South Delhi. Nirbhaya few days later died in a Singapore hospital. Out of the six convicts, one was a juvenile and the other – Ram Singh (bus driver) – allegedly committed suicide in the Tihar Jail during the trial of the case.
