Nation Next engaged young Nagpurians in a Street Talk at Nation Next to know about their awareness levels about the upcoming NMC Elections.

As Nagpur is buzzing with Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections, which are scheduled on February 21, we engaged young Nagpurians in a Street Talk at Nation Next to know about their awareness levels about the same. Through our questions, we realised that people find lot of governance issues in the city. That too loads of them!

So, what can we do to solve these issues? Choose our representatives wisely, right? Are we doing it? As we spoke to them, we learnt that most of the youngsters lack the basic political awareness, something, which is extremely important for choosing the right people in governance. It’s sad, but true! We don’t even know the names of our representatives, who are going to govern us. Then how can we reap the benefits of our democracy? Whom should we blame for this political oblivion of ours? The system? The politicians? Or ourselves? We, the young people of India?

When Nation Next asked the Mayor of Nagpur Pravin Datke about the reason behind the lack of awareness among the public at large, he said, “People never pay heed towards elections, candidates or politicians once they are done with their voting. They remember us only when they need to get birth, death or marriage certificates issued, or pay their taxes, etc. In fact, today, each and every detail about the elections, politicians or even candidates is available online. The public is extremely indifferent. They don’t even know where is the NMC office or the zone their residence falls under. Having said this, the civic body is also at fault. I request all the young voters (who are below 35) to vote for the right candidate. As a result, the parties would also be compelled to field good contestants.”
