Under the Maharashtra Government’s ambitious plan of planting 13 crore saplings, Nagpur Municipal Corporation has decided to undertake a massive tree plantation drive by planting one lakh trees in the city. Keeping in the mind the World Environment Day on June 5, NMC will be planting around 60,000 bamboo and aajan saplings near river banks in Nagpur. The massive tree plantation drive will be headed by NMC commissioner Virendra Singh and will involve NMC officials, staff and corporators.
The drive will be undertaken at Nag River, Pili Nadi and Pora River simultaneously on the same day and at the same time. The saplings will be planted in the river bed with the help of coporators and officials of the respective zones of the rivers. The reason behind planting bamboo and aajan saplings is that these plants are generally not eaten by animals. And so, the NMC won’t require a tree guard. Additonally, these plants will also add to the beauty of the rivers.
Apart from undertaking the plantation drive near rivers, plantation will also be done at NMC operated schools, open plots, primary health centres, hospital’ etc. The preparations for the drive have already started and they will be reviewed again on June 3.
