Bollywood actor Om Puri who passed away earlier this year in January was remembered at the 89th Academy Awards during the annual 'In Memoriam' montage.

Bollywood actor Om Puri who passed away earlier this year in January was remembered at the 89th Academy during the annual ‘In Memoriam’ montage. Through the ‘In memoriam’ segment, a tribute was paid to all the lost legends who passed away in 2016 as singer Sara Bareilles performed the song ‘Both Sides Now’ by Joni Mitchell. Those who were remembered include Carrie Fisher, Prince, Gene Wilder, Michael Cimino, Patty Duke, Garry Marshall, Anton Yelchin, Mary Tyler Moore, Curtis Hanson and John Hurt. An emotional Jennifer Aniston introduced the memoriam segment even as she paid tribute to American actor and director Bill Paxton who died just a day before the award ceremony and could not be included in the montage.

Padma Shri awardee and the honourary officer of the Order of British Empire – Om Puri – apart from appearing in several Bollywood movies in a career spanning more than four decades also appeared in international films like City of Joy (1992), Wolf (1994) My Son the fanatic (1997), among many others.
