Nationalist Congress Party MLC Prakash Gajbhiye during the Maharashtra Legislature winter session 2016 raised the issue of right to education in a media briefing. He informed that around five lac children in Maharashtra are not getting education which is their constitutional right.

Here’s what he said:

“It’s unfortunate that a lot of children in Maharashtra are not getting education which is their constitutional right. According to surveys by around 300 NGO’s in Maharashtra, around five lac children are not going to the schools. State government should work towards this because it’s their responsibility. Children of many labourers, farmers and other poor people in Maharashtra are not able to study in schools because of their financial condition. And this number is increasing day by day. It’s unfortunate that this is happening in the land of Mahatma Phule, Shahu Maharaj and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. We have requested the government to do a proper survey using government machinery about this particular issue. We raised this issue in the last winter session as well and still the survey has not taken place. Students don’t have a place to stay and they don’t have the means to eat as well. They are the responsibility of the government and I request the state government and Honourable Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that the government should do a proper survey as soon as possible and help these poor students.”
