Ram Navami celebrations in China may come as a surprise to people in India, but it’s not at all something new for the Maharashtrian and the Indian community in Shanghai. They have been joining the Waikar family (from Nagpur, Maharashtra, India) for these celebrations since the past eight years ever since the family moved to Shanghai.
Continuing the tradition of hosting Ram Navami celebrations in Shanghai, on March 25, 2018, a Ram Navami pooja was conducted at the Waikar residence. The pooja was conducted as per the religious customs including Rama Janma Pooja, chanting of Ram Janma Shloka in perfect rhythm (with translation in Hindi) followed by swinging the Lord Rama idol in a swing, accompanied by singing the traditional Palna followed by an aarti.
The highlight of the day was, however, Ram Leela staged by an enthusiastic team from the Indian community in Shanghai. Under the guidance of Mukesh Sharma, who impressed the audience with his superb narration in Awadhi language interspersed with Marathi songs, the singers and actors in realistic costumes did an excellent job of keeping the audience (including small kids) of about 120 persons glued to their seats for about 55 minutes. By the time the performance concluded, the audience was left humming to the tunes of ‘Yeh Kahani Ram Ki Sunne Aaye Dur Dur Se Log’ from this divine treat on the auspicious occasion of Ramanavami.
