Senior lawyer Indu Malhotra (61), on Friday, was sworn in as the 25th Judge of the Supreme Court of India making her the first woman lawyer to be appointed as the judge of the apex court directly. Malhotra administered the oath of office and secrecy in the presence of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra at a ceremony held at court number 1 of the apex court.
Malhotra, whose name was recommended by the collegium for elevation along with that of Uttarakhand High Court Justice KM Joseph, would be the seventh woman judge at the Supreme Court since independence. The other women judges were elevated to the Supreme Court from high courts.
This is the third time in the 67-year history of the apex court that it will have two sitting women (Justice Malhotra and Justice R Banumathi) judges together. Earlier, Justices Gyan Sudha Misra along with Ranjana Prakash Desai and then Justice Desai along with Justice Banumathi have been sitting judges of the apex court together.
