In what can be termed as the biggest upset of Lok Sabha Elections 2019, BJP candidate and Union Minister Smriti Irani has defeated Congress President Rahul Gandhi in Congress’s bastion Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.
Conceding defeat to Smriti, Rahul during a press conference held earlier in the day said, “I respect the decision and congratulate Smriti Irani ji.”
Congress has not lost the Amethi seat in the last three decades, except in 1998 when it was won by BJP’s Sanjay Sinh. Rahul had been representing and winning the Amethi seat since 2004.
While Rahul has lost the Amethi seat to Smriti, he has comfortably won from his second seat in Kerala’s Wayand.
