As per a report in a leading daily, the Supreme Court has issued notices to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and state government following a plea requesting cancellation of a plot lease allotted by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) to Maharashtra Rashtrabhasha Sabha at Shankar Nagar, Nagpur. The plea was filed by Madhukar Kukde (President, Citizen Forum for Equality).
Along with the CM and state government, other respondents in the case include: NIT Chairman, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Commissioner, former Maharashtra CM Sushil Kumar Shinde, Maharashtra Rashtrabhasha Sabha Vice President Girish Gandhi, Datte Meghe (former Rajya Sabha MP and owner of SMG Hospital), Wockhardt Hospital, Prajakta Developers, etc. Justices R Bhanumati and Ranjan Gogoi after hearing the plea has asked the respondents to reply by July 4.
In a PIL filed through his counsel Tushar Mandlekar, Kukde has alleged that the said plot of 1.14 acres was given to the Sabha for promotion of Hindi language but the Sabha has misused the plot for commercial purposes. Kuke has claimed that the Sabha has virtually handed over the plot to SMG Hospital, which is in a profit sharing agreement with Wockhardt Hospital. He further alleged that, Wockhardt Hospital is itself being run illegally without NIT’s permission. By using the land for commercial purposes, Kukde said that the Sabha has defeated its objective of promotion of Hindi language.
