Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Selvi J Jayalalithaa (68), fondly referred as ‘Amma’ by her followers, passed away yesterday (December 5, 2016). She was admitted at Apollo Hospital in Chennai, where she breathed her last at 11:30 pm. Jayalalita, who underwent a treatment for 73 days in the hospital, died due to a massive cardiac arrest. She was undergoing a kidney failure from past six months since September 22, 2016.
The Tamil Nadu government has declared a seven-day mourning with a three-day off for schools and colleges. At midnight, shortly after Jayalalithaa’s death, O Panneerselvam, senior leader of AIADMK was elected as the leader of the Legislative Party and would soon be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for the third time.
