Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who breathed his last on August 16 at 5:05 pm, was cremated today (August 17) at the Smruti Stal in New Delhi. Vajpayee’s foster daughter Namita Bhattacharya performed all the rituals and the last rites during the cremation. The former PM was cremated with full state honours.

Vajpayee, who never got married, adopted Namita, who is the daughter of his Gwalior college friend Rajkumari Kaul. Namita is married to Ranjan Bhattacharya, who has also worked as an OSD (Officer on Special Duty).

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was the first non-Congress PM to complete a full term in office, was a ten-time Lok Sabha MP and a two-time Rajya Sabha MP. He was a statesman and a political stalwart who was respected and admired by leaders across party lines. Apart from having a inspiring political career, Vajpayee was an excellent orator and a poet.
